What we do

Leg Strength Is Where Everyone Starts.

Everyone needs leg strength to stand, walk, balance, and move through everyday life. But everyone starts from a different place. We meet your loved one where they are and customize the exercises, level of challenge, and pace to their abilities and needs. Whatever their age or diagnosis, the goal is the same: build the leg strength they need to stay safe, active, and independent as long as possible.

How Tandem is different

We Specialize in What Comes After Traditional Physical Therapy.

Medicare-covered physical therapy is an important service, but Medicare has rules that determine when physical therapy can continue and when it stops. That can happen even when your loved one is still weak and needs more strength to safely do everyday things.

People come to Tandem from many different places. Some are still rebuilding strength after an illness or injury. Others are gradually losing strength or finding everyday activities harder. And some simply want to stay strong enough to keep doing what matters to them.

At Tandem, we build leg strength and work on balance to help older adults stay safe, active, and independent. Leg strength is the foundation for both: helping with standing, walking, stairs, getting in and out of a car, and maintaining balance during everyday movement.

The same physical therapist gets to know your loved one and adjusts the exercises, level of challenge, and pace as they get stronger.

Tandem is private pay, so your loved one’s program isn’t limited by insurance coverage. You decide how long to continue, so the work can keep building and maintaining strength, balance, and function for as long as it’s helping.

25+ years of experience building leg strength, improving balance, and supporting independence.

Where families start

The Four Ways Families Come to Us

Families come to Tandem for different reasons. Maybe Medicare therapy has ended. For others, a parent wants to stay active, is having a harder time with everyday activities, or has a diagnosis that has changed what’s possible.

Whatever brings you here, the goal is the same: help your loved one build and maintain the strength, balance, and function they need for everyday life.

Frequently asked

Questions about how Tandem works

How long is a session, and how often would we come?

Each Tandem session is 45 minutes: about 20 minutes focused on strength and 25 minutes on balance. We come to their home a minimum of twice a week. They always work with the same physical therapist, who gets to know them, tracks their progress, and continually adjusts the program as they get stronger.

What actually happens in a Tandem session?

Sessions include progressive resistance training for the legs, balance and gait practice, and rehearsal of the movements that matter for everyday life - from getting up from a chair to climbing stairs or getting into a car. The therapist measures progress, adjusts the challenge as strength improves, and makes sure each exercise is done properly. It is purposeful strength training - not stretching - and it happens in the comfort of the person’s own home.

Is Tandem covered by Medicare or private insurance?

Tandem is intentionally private pay. We specialize in ongoing strength and balance training without insurance determining what we work on, how long we continue, or how quickly we progress. We work at your loved one's pace, adjusting the program as they get stronger and their needs change.

What if my parent has a serious diagnosis?

Tandem was created with older adults with complex medical conditions in mind. Regardless of age or diagnosis, we meet your loved one where they are and build the strength and balance they need to stay active and independent.

How will we know it is working?

Progress will show up in different ways. Your loved one may lift more weight, need less assistance with balance exercises, move more easily, or stand from a chair with less effort. Their physical therapist tracks these changes and adjusts the program as they get stronger. We also keep families informed about the progress we're seeing and what to expect next.
