We must retain adequate leg strength at any age in order to spend time with family, enjoy our friends, hobbies, independence, retain safe mobility and keep living costs down. Leg strength is the fundamental component of balance and mobility.
Our physical therapist will work 1-on-1 with the client in their home, where the client is most comfortable. When meeting with a client, Tandem Strength & Balance® will evaluate the client’s weaknesses and design an fitness program crafted to address the unique needs of the client and how best to build functional leg strength. Having the same physical therapist at each visit builds trust and enables the therapist to consistently challenge the client, realizing those “pre-conceived unattainable” goals.
Tandem Strength & Balance® leg-strength training programs enable our clients to build a “StrengthBank®.” This crucial strength reserve can be drawn upon in the event of an injury or illness to reduce recovery time and promote healthy aging. Strong legs are far more dependable than any wheelchair, walker or cane.
Given typical aging patterns of physical activity, a 70-year-old woman could have 50% to 70% less strength than she had at 30. The good news is two decades of strength and muscle loss can be reversed by lower extremity strengthening for at least two months.
As physical therapists, we continue to challenge all of our clients in a way that caregivers and families can’t. We address the root cause of their mobility issues and help older adults build strength so they can enjoy their independence and keep living costs lower.
