Don’t accept time limits! Many people can’t get better in the designated time established and allotted for by insurance companies. That DOES NOT mean they can’t get better. It TAKES TIME to build leg strength and to make functional/balance changes.
Research states that “long lasting and significant change in strength occurs over a 12- to 16-week period; however, in most instances, aging adults are discharged from physical therapy care in hospital and rehabilitation settings before such gains can be realized.”
Many of the “symptoms” displayed with a major diagnosis are exaggerated when leg weakness is present, i.e. shuffling feet when walking. This is a common sign of Parkinson’s Disease. If a person has leg weakness, the shuffling is much worse and can lead to an increased risk of falling.
Increasing Leg Strength
We at Tandem Strength & Balance, have found that increasing leg strength reduces if not eliminates, the shuffling gait of those living with Parkinson’s Disease. The person may still have Parkinson’s Disease but we are addressing the aging issues (loss of leg strength); therefore, the individual can fight the effects of their diagnosis more readily.
Leg Strength Philosophy
This philosophy is at the core of what we do at Tandem Strength & Balance. We continue to build functional leg strength to allow ALL aging adults to remain as MOBILE and SAFE as possible. We continually challenge and build on previous exercises so the individual continues to improve regularly and consistently. We are very successful at helping aging seniors gain adequate leg strength so they can live life the way they want to live it!
