Although medical schools cover the basic principles of exercise physiology, detailed training in physical fitness, including strength training, is often limited. As a result, many doctors may not feel adequately prepared to discuss or recommend strength training programs to their patients.

Doctors are often pressed for time during patient consultations. The average primary care visit lasts about 15-20 minutes, and during this short period, doctors must address immediate health concerns, review medications, and manage chronic conditions. In such a constrained timeframe, discussing detailed exercise recommendations, including the nuances of strength training, can be challenging and underprioritized.

There are also persistent misconceptions about strength training that may influence doctors’ recommendations.
